Sinds 2003 is het mogelijk om via iTunes van Apple online muziek te downloaden voor de iPod. Inmiddels zijn er meer dan 4 miljoen nummers beschikbaar. De prijs per nummer is laag en de kwaliteit is uitstekend dankzij goede compressietechnieken in het .m4a formaat. Het succes van deze dienst overtreft alle verwachtingen, miljarden nummers zijn inmiddels gedownload. Een van de voordelen is dat je deze muziek bestanden niet alleen kunt bewaren op de iPod zelf maar deze muziek bestanden ook naar CD (data, geen audio cd) kan branden. Dus als de iPod geen ruimte meer beschikbaar heeft kun je wel deze muziek bestanden bewaren en veilig stellen.
